Ingredient Notes

- Apples - this recipe is perfect to make in the fall months when apples are in season and bursting with flavor!
- Spices - ground cinnamon and ground cloves are the ultimate combo.
- Honey - honey bring out the natural sweetness of the apples.
- Lemon - lemon juice may seem like a surprising ingredient, however it brightens the dish and prevents the apples from oxidizing (turning brown) after they have been sliced.
Substitutions and Variations
- No honey? No problem! Try using maple syrup or brown sugar instead.
- Add your favorite spices such as ginger, nutmeg or allspice for a flavor variation.
- Top the baked apples with nuts such as pecans or walnuts to add some crunch!
Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Peel and slice the apples.

Step 2: Mix together the apple slices, lemon juice, honey, cinnamon and cloves.

Step 3: Pour the mixture into a baking dish, and bake for 30 minutes until fork-tender.

Tips For Choosing The Best Apples
- Make sure to look for firm, unblemished apples. If you do have apples that are bruised just make sure to cut off the soft bruised section before using them.
- There is always so much debate about the best variety of apple to use for baking. Personally, I use whatever apples look the best and are available to me. Some of my recommended varieties are pink lady, fuji, honeycrisp or granny smith apples.
- If you living in an area where you are able to, try picking your own apples! This is a great way to have the full farm to table experience and I find it to be such a fun activity.
